takeCHARGE RECOGNIZED WITH FIFTH ENERGY STAR® AWARD
Each year, ENERGY STAR® Canada recognizes businesses and organizations for their outstanding contributions to saving energy. The awards recognize utilities, manufacturers, retailers, associations, homebuilders, and buildings that have demonstrated excellence in offering Canadian consumers the most energy-efficient products and technology available. Award winners earn the special recognition of being the best in their class.
For the third consecutive year, Natural Resources Canada recognized takeCHARGE, a joint partnership between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro), with the award of Utility Program of the Year. This award is takeCHARGE’s fifth ENERGY STAR Canada award in three years.
- The Instant Rebate Program offers customers rebates on energy-efficient items through participating retailers. Over 3.7 million instant rebates have been provided on items such as ENERGY STAR LED light bulbs. The program has helped customers save over 75 GWh collectively, which is the same as taking 3,200 electrically heated homes off the electricity grid.In 2021, takeCHARGE provided at-the-cash rebates on over 201,000 ENERGY STAR certified products at 56 retail locations. The next Instant Rebate campaign, from September 20th to November 15th, will give customers another chance to save energy and money with low-cost, energy efficient upgrades.
- Through the Make the Switch LED bulb giveaway, takeCHARGE donated over 21,000 ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs to 24 non-profit organizations and charities across Newfoundland and Labrador.For its 2022 initiative, takeCHARGE is now inviting non-profit organizations and other groups providing support within their communities to submit proposals. LED bulbs can be used to reduce operational lighting costs in their facilities or to help their members be more energy efficient. Learn more and apply today!
- The Business Efficiency Program offers rebates on off-the-shelf energy-efficient products and custom solutions for businesses big and small. In 2021, takeCHARGE provided rebates to customers helping them save over 40,800 kWh annually. That’s enough energy to power a lighthouse for 15 months.
- Through the Isolated Direct Install Program, takeCHARGE provides free-of-charge outreach, education and energy-efficient products to home and business owners in the 41 remote diesel-system communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2021, 6,798 ENERGY STAR light bulbs were installed in homes, saving over 320,000 kWh annually

takeCHARGE is a joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro that combines the expertise and customer reach of Newfoundland and Labrador’s two electricity utilities. With more than 70,000 program participants, the takeCHARGE partnership works to bring energy efficiency awareness and rebate programs to everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador.
