Metrobus is on a Journey to Energy Efficiency
It all starts with one lightbulb moment: once you realize just how much your workplace can save, energy efficiency just makes sense. And the journey to total efficiency is never over – just ask our friends at Metrobus!
takeCHARGE helps businesses like Metrobus save on monthly electricity costs with personalized tips and rebates on all kinds of energy-efficient products – and Metrobus is always working towards exploring new efficiencies.
The Metrobus facility on Messenger Drive in St. John’s was designed with energy efficiency in mind. It features many energy-efficient initiatives that reduce Metrobus’s carbon footprint while also saving money. Rainwater is collected, stored, and used to wash the fleet at the end of each service day. The facility boasts a geothermal heating system, heat recovery systems in the bus storage and repair garage areas, and energy-efficient lighting throughout. In fact, the facility was awarded a 2013 BOMA Pinnacle Award for Innovation in recognition of their creative application of new energy-efficient technologies.
takeCHARGE helped Metrobus access $23,000 in project rebates to upgrade the LED lighting in their facility’s storage, service, and maintenance areas. And all that conserved energy really adds up – now they’re saving over $27,000 a year on electricity costs (and within 2 years, the upgrade paid for itself!).
Metrobus is a proud community leader in energy efficiency. Finding new, innovative ways to conserve energy is at the forefront of everything they do. “Over 25 years ago, we made a commitment to being an environmental leader in our community,” says General Manager Judy Powell. “Public transit is already an environmentally friendly transportation choice, and it is important that it be reflected in the way we do business. Operational efficiency, customer service, and environmental impact are three important factors that guide our decisions.”
Never idle when it comes to saving energy, Metrobus is currently upgrading the lighting in its facility’s administration areas. In the future, they plan to introduce electric buses to their fleet. It’s one lightbulb moment after another for Metrobus – and helping businesses like them turn bright ideas into energy-efficient actions is just what we do at takeCHARGE!
