The Community Impact Award recognizes a city, town or municipality in Newfoundland and Labrador that has excelled in energy efficiency through activities such as campaigns, project or building development and energy management.

Town halls are installing LED lights. Department stores are upgrading their heating and cooling systems. Individuals all over the province are taking brilliant steps to save energy. Here at takeCHARGE, we believe that deserves to be celebrated! The Luminary Awards recognize companies, organizations, communities, and individuals all across Newfoundland and Labrador who are taking brilliant steps to save energy – and inspiring others to do the same.
Nominate someone (or even yourself!) and help us shine a light on projects and achievements in energy efficiency. We’ll share stories on social media, and recognize winners at our exciting awards ceremony.
Seven Awards for Energy Efficiency
The Luminary Awards celebrates individuals, organizations, and communities who are shining examples in these seven categories:

Community Impact Award

Leadership Award – Individual
The Leadership Award - (Individual) recognizes an individual’s leadership, contribution and impact on energy efficiency in a city or town, community or organization in Newfoundland and Labrador through activities, campaigns or project(s).

Leadership Award - Organization
The Leadership Award - (Organization) recognizes an establishment’s leadership and commitment to energy efficiency in Newfoundland and Labrador through activities such as planning, project development, energy management and employee engagement.

Innovation Award
The Innovation Award recognizes a business, organization or not-for-profit whose innovative energy efficiency project or service resulted in substantial energy savings in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Partnership Award
The Partnership Award recognizes the outstanding delivery of energy efficiency solutions, services or education by an organization, individual or not-for-profit.

Retail Partnership Award
The Retail Partnership Award recognizes the outstanding delivery of energy efficiency solutions, services, products or education to residential customers by a retailer in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The BIG Award
The BIG Award recognizes a participant of the takeCHARGE Business Efficiency Program that, through energy efficient upgrades, has seen the most significant increase in their energy savings. Nominations are not required for this award; the winner will be selected among program participants.

Town of Burin
The Town of Burin is taking brilliant steps to save energy and inspiring others to do the same! This year, they partnered with takeCHARGE and upgraded to all electronic thermostats, draft-proofed, added insulation, installed LED lighting and three energy efficient heat pumps in their main office, garage and other municipal buildings.

Town of Rocky Harbour
The Town of Rocky Harbour has made tremendous strides in energy efficiency by installing LED lighting at the Town Office and Gros Morne Arena, installing 40 new LED streetlights and mini-split heat pumps at the Town Office, Community Hall & Gros Morne Arena. Their efforts have even encouraged the local church and seniors 50+ Club to make energy efficient upgrades.

Beothuck Building, Managed by Martek Morgan Finch
The Beothuck Building utilized passive heat recovery, air to water heat pumps, and a remote Energy Management Control System to retrofit the five-story office building. Their goals were to improve occupant comfort, save energy and reduce greenhouse gases. In the first year, they saw energy savings of over 400,000 kWhs, and 98 tonnes of GHG – netting $37,000 in energy cost savings!

Empowered Homes – Mysa Smart Thermostats
In 2018/19 NL Hydro started working with Mysa™ on a Wi-Fi Thermostat Pilot Project. Empowered Homes Mysa smart thermostat is designed specifically for baseboard heaters and allows homeowners to control their heat with their smartphone. The project provided energy savings to customers and valuable information for possible future programs about how electricity can be reduced during peak hours.

Reliable Heat Pump Services Ltd.
Reliable Heat Pump Services Ltd. is focused on providing customers with energy-efficient products and solutions. Owner James Parrell-Gough is an expert on the proper sizing of heat pumps, energy-efficient options and factors that affect efficiency. He has worked with takeCHARGE to increase customer understanding of heat pumps and contributed to the development of educational resources. He also advocates for the use of certified professionals.

Honeywell
A long-time advocate of energy conservation and efficiency, Honeywell has partnered with takeCHARGE, and worked with local organizations and municipalities to improve the energy efficiency of facilities across the island. Honeywell customers have saved energy and money, reduced maintenance costs, created operational efficiencies, and improved overall building comfort.

Neil Hawkes
As Sustainable Energy Coordinator with the Nunatsiavut Government, Neil Hawkes has served as a key ally of Hydro’s takeCHARGE team in the Nunatsiavut communities of Labrador. He has introduced new programs and offered invaluable insights into the needs of the community and how these can pair effectively with regional energy savings goals.

Dr. David J. Goodyear, Ph.D.
Dr. Goodyear aspires to develop a more sustainable lifestyle – he built Newfoundland’s first passive house, integrated food security with an extensive garden and underground storage cellar, owns one of Newfoundland’s only earth bermed passive solar winter greenhouses, and shares his wisdom on his blog, Flatrock Passive House, which sees about 1,500 visitors a month from around the world.

Donna Williams
Donna is a highly respected energy efficiency ambassador for her community in Labrador, and a program representative for Hydro’s Isolated Diesel System energy efficiency program. She helps to promote the program, provide useful information on energy use, and installs energy efficient products in homes and businesses. Her work has been directly linked to over 1 GWh of savings.

Allan Locke
Allan began his career with Newfoundland Power in 2014 as a Customer Service Representative and since then has acquired a wealth of knowledge regarding energy efficiency. He goes above and beyond for our customers, suggesting ways they can reduce consumption and how to monitor their usage. He’s always happy to share his knowledge and expertise with other customer service agents.

John Poole
John Poole started at Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro as Internal Energy Efficiency Advisor, where he achieved significant energy saving opportunities within NL Hydro’s facilities. In 2018, he moved to Hydro’s Innovation and Productivity Team and is now Senior Supervisor Facilities Management and Fleet Support. John continues to explore energy efficient opportunities daily, and demonstrates his long-term vision for savings.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing
The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is committed to making their units more energy efficient, with over 2,000 units upgraded to date. This includes attic and basement insulation, ENERGY STAR windows, digital thermostats and LED light bulbs. They also offer low-income homeowner programs that provide funding for energy-efficient upgrades, and their Affordable Housing Program stipulates energy-efficient requirements for new homes.

YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador
The YMCA has made significant energy-efficient improvements to their facilities across the province. The Ches Penney Family YMCA in St. John’s has worked with takeCHARGE to switch to LED lighting and made upgrades to save on water heating costs. The Marystown YMCA was awarded LEED Gold status, in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program – the first building in the province to achieve this honor!

Nunacor Development Corporation
Nunacor has made considerable efforts to increase energy efficiency in their communities and strive to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainability. In 2019, they engaged in a takeCHARGE energy efficiency audit and are moving forward with installing attic insulation, LED lighting, exit signs and programmable thermostats. Their employees are engaged through energy efficiency challenges, encouraging the reduction of energy consumption in their own homes.

Canadian Tire, Labrador City
Labrador City’s Canadian Tire has worked with Hydro on several energy efficiency initiatives and has shown dedication and consistency in helping homeowners save energy and money. The store has been the top performing location for all Hydro retailers in the takeCHARGE Instant Rebate program, helping residents of Labrador City save money instantly and for years to come.

Kent Building Supplies
Kent is dedicated to making energy efficiency more affordable and accessible to their customers island-wide. Kent supports a wide range of takeCHARGE initiatives with flyers, signage, demonstrations and in-store events. It is through partnerships with retailers such as Kent Building Supplies, that takeCHARGE is able to promote energy efficiency and bring rebate programs to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Shallow Bay Motel and Cabins
Shallow Bay Motel and Cabins has been an active participant in the Business Efficiency Program. In 2017, they installed LED exit signs, LED bulbs and occupancy sensors at the hotel. In 2019, they replaced the electric baseboard heaters with heat pumps in all of their guest rooms, which resulted in over 50 MWh of energy savings.

Seaforce Technologies
Seaforce Technologies partnered with takeCHARGE, as part of our Business Efficiency Program, to increase the energy efficiency of their building. They installed new high bay LED lighting, air to air heat pumps and air to water heat pumps, which resulted in over 430 MWH of annual energy savings – that’s over 30% savings!
