Energy Efficiency Helps Ronald McDonald House Keep Families Close

Ronald McDonald House teamed up with takeCHARGE and are saving $115 every month on electricity costs.

Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador officially opened on September 27, 2012. With approximately 17,000 square feet of living space, the House is specifically designed to provide a home environment for sick children, their siblings and their parents and/or caregivers. The House is bright, bold, and full of energy as children’s voices and laughter make it a warm, comfortable and loving home away from home. Each year, hundreds of families from all over Newfoundland and Labrador call Ronald McDonald House home. Stays can range from days to months and on any given week there are up to 15 families in the residence while receiving the specialized treatment they need. For many of them this means they must travel to St. John’s to receive specialized pediatric care and treatment at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre. Ronald McDonald House helps sick or injured children stay close to their families and to the care and resources they need.

Ronald McDonald House partnered with takeCHARGE to tackle their energy efficiency lighting project, replacing 72 incandescent bulbs with new LED fixtures. They also replaced 11 parking lot lights. Before the upgrade, staff were replacing burnt-out light bulbs almost daily. With the LED fixtures that has stopped completely. Burnt-out bulbs are a thing of the past and no more dragging a ladder around the house either. On top of that, Ronald McDonald House received a takeCHARGE incentive of $1,384. RMH is continuing to assess other investment opportunities through energy efficiency upgrades.

“takeCHARGE rebates helped make this project a reality. The takeCHARGE team worked with us to help us find ways to save energy and money “says Annette Godsell, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House NL.”
