Apply to host an EV fast charger!
Your business or municipality could be part of a province-wide electric vehicle (EV) charging network.
In support of local EV growth, takeCHARGE plans to install 12 EV charging stations across Newfoundland and Labrador in 2022/23. These new charging stations will have both a direct current fast charger (DCFC) and Level 2 charger.
takeCHARGE is now requesting applications from businesses and municipalities to host these EV charging stations. Eligible locations were pre-selected based on existing and planned charging stations throughout the province. To meet project timelines, the installation of chargers could occur in 2022, with estimated completion in 2023. Ten EV charging stations will be installed throughout Newfoundland Power’s service territory and two stations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro’s service territory. (See below under “eligible locations” tab.)

Site Criteria
For a site to be suitable for takeCHARGE to install an EV charging station, it must meet the following criteria:
a) Be located in or nearby an eligible location;
b) Be located no further than 150 meters from a three-phase distribution line with sufficient excess capacity. Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro will determine sufficient excess capacity. Proximity to a three-phase distribution line is required to ensure sufficient power supply for the charging station. If applicants are unfamiliar with their proximity to a three-phase distribution line, you can confirm by emailing ElectricVehicles@TakeChargeNL.ca, before applying. Applications can also be submitted without confirmation of this requirement as all proposed sites will be assessed to ensure they meet this criterion as part of the evaluation process;
c) Be located directly adjacent to a major highway or traffic route;
d) Be visible and accessible from the road;
e) Allow for two designated parking spots for EVs (approximately 2.75 meters by 6 meters each) that are visible and accessible from the road;
f) Have ample land adjacent to the parking spots for equipment (approximately 4 meters by 10 meters long);
Parking spaces will be painted and designated for EV parking, and the adjacent land will be for the installation of chargers, transformers and other associated infrastructure by takeCHARGE.
Applicants should review applicable application documents to ensure the proposed site meets all specific requirements for the location. These are general requirements. Additional criteria may be required for specific sites.

Charger Information
These charging stations will have both a direct current fast charger (DCFC) and a Level 2 charger.
DCFC or Level 3 chargers deliver charging through a 480 volt plug and require specialized high-powered charging equipment. These chargers typically deliver up to 400 km of range per hour of charging. An 80% battery charge can take approximately 30 minutes and a full charge about 1 hour for an all-electric vehicle, depending on the vehicle model and range. DCFC charging is often found along highways and in other high traffic areas.
Level 2 chargers provide charging through a 240 volt plug and require the installation of charging equipment by a qualified electrician. Level 2 chargers typically deliver up to 30 km of range per hour of charging. A full charge can take approximately 2 hours for a plug-in hybrid and approximately 9 hours for an all-electric vehicle, depending on the vehicle model and range. Level 2 charging is used in homes, workplaces, and public places.
