takeCHARGE, a joint partnership between Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) and Newfoundland Power, is pleased to announce the winners of the 4th annual Kids in Charge (K-I-C Start) school contest.
The aim of the province wide contest is to raise awareness about the importance of saving energy among students in elementary through high school. Students in kindergarten to grade twelve were invited to submit projects that demonstrate energy conservation in creative and effective ways for a chance to win. K-6 classes had a chance to win one of four $2,000 customizable electronics packages. Grades 7-12 students entered for a chance to win an iPad for themselves and 5 iPads for their school. A record number of entries were received this year – over 100 submissions including videos, posters, magazines and songs.
“I would like to congratulate all of the participants for their exceptional submissions. The students did an outstanding job of developing creative and informative entries, all while learning about the importance of energy conservation in a fun and interactive way,” says Diane Whalen, Manager of Energy Conservation & Corporate Affairs with Newfoundland Power. “We are thrilled to offer this contest as part of our school program. It is important to continue to develop awareness with today’s youth about the importance of saving energy.”
“We would like to send a special thank you to the teachers who went above and beyond their curriculum to participate in this contest and educate their students about energy efficiency,” says Barry Brophy, Energy Efficiency Manager, takeCHARGE, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. We hope that this contest sets precedents for local schools to empower their students to learn about energy and energy efficiency.
