Ronald McDonald House makes your ‘home away from home’ more comfortable with energy efficient upgrades

Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador is designed to provide a comfortable, home-like environment for sick children, their siblings, and their parents or caregivers. Covering approximately 17,000 square feet, the House provides hundreds of families from across Newfoundland and Labrador a warm and welcoming place to stay while their children receive specialized care and treatment at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre.

In addition to their work supporting families, Ronald McDonald House Charities Newfoundland and Labrador has been recognized for their commitment to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency. In 2021, the organization received the Leadership Luminary Award. This prestigious award highlighted their positive impact on protecting the environment, supporting healthy communities, and saving energy. Their efforts included multiple projects through the takeCHARGE Business Efficiency Program to install heat pumps for both water and space heating. They also integrated an Energy Management Control System to streamline all heating, cooling, and ventilation systems within the facility. These upgrades allowed them to replace manual thermostats, enhance guest comfort, and achieve significant improvements in overall energy efficiency.

The earlier partnership with takeCHARGE also focused on upgrading the House’s lighting system. They replaced 72 incandescent bulbs with new LED fixtures and upgraded 11 parking lot lights, eliminating the need for daily bulb replacements and further reducing energy consumption.

“takeCHARGE rebates helped make this project a reality. The takeCHARGE team worked with us to find ways to save energy and money,” said Annette Godsell, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House NL.

The organization continues to explore other potential energy efficiency upgrades to further their commitment to sustainability.
