Saving Comes Naturally in the Town of Placentia – and their Fire Hall.

Steeped in more than 500 years of history, tradition and progress go hand in hand in the Town of Placentia.

A combination of the communities of Townside, Southeast Placentia, Freshwater, Dunville, and Jerseyside, along with the Argentia Industrial Park, it’s home to a population of about 3,200. And you can tell by their roster of annual celebrations, from the Voices of Placentia Bay Festival to the Placentia Bay Industrial Showcase, that they’re as proud of their shared heritage as they are of their forward-thinking spirit.

That eye for progress is the force behind the Town’s ongoing commitment to energy efficiency. They’ve already been recognized as two-time winners of the TakeCharge of Your Town challenge and are the recipients of a TakeCharge Luminary Award for Community Impact.

Now they’ve renewed their dedication to smart, energy-efficient choices with the TakeCharge Business Efficiency Program. The Town completed a series of upgrades, installing heat pumps, LED Luminaries, High Bay Lighting and LED Wall packs. These made the key buildings at the heart of the community – the Fire Hall, Town Hall, and Arena – more comfortable and cost-effective to operate. And with a combination of Custom and Product Rebates, the Town won’t just reduce their energy costs going forward, they’ve also made these projects as affordable as possible.

One key upgrade was the installation of mini-split heat pumps at the Fire Hall. Heat pumps are a smart solution for municipalities, delivering efficient, reliable heating in buildings that traditionally consume a lot of energy. A perfect fit for this high demand space where heating is essential 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

“It was easy to see the benefits right away,” says Fire Chief Wayne Power, “The heat pumps made a noticeable difference, both in comfort inside the hall and the costs to operate them.”

This project is a great example of how rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador can take on practical upgrades that deliver real energy savings. And the TakeCharge Business Efficiency Program offers rebates to help offset initial costs, for both efficient products you can buy off-the-shelf or larger projects that require custom rebate structures.

Businesses, organizations, and municipalities across Newfoundland and Labrador have already saved energy and money with the thousands of rebates provided by the TakeCharge Business Efficiency Program.
