ANNOUNCING OUR 2026 SCHOOL CONTEST WINNERS

TakeCharge, a joint partnership between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro), is pleased to announce the winners of the 12th annual Kids in Charge (K-I-C Start) school contest.

The annual province-wide contest continues to inspire students to embrace energy conservation. TakeCharge invited students from kindergarten to grade twelve to submit innovative projects demonstrating creative and impactful ways to save energy. This year’s participants had the chance to win up to $2,500 for technology and other classroom resources. Once again, the contest saw an impressive response, with numerous submissions from schools across the province, including videos, posters, and songs.

“We know that a great way to make meaningful impacts to how our customers save energy is by teaching children smart ways to use it and letting them bring that message back to their parents” says Keith Barrett, Manager of Energy Solutions at Newfoundland Power. “When we run these contests, we continue to be impressed in the children’s understanding of the importance of energy conservation and the creativity they use to express that understanding. If you’d like to get involved in the contest next year or would like TakeCharge to come to your school to deliver a presentation, please reach out.”

“Congratulations to all the students and teachers who took part in this year’s contest. The level of enthusiasm, creativity, and thoughtfulness shown in these projects is truly inspiring,” says Elaine Cole, Energy Efficiency Administrator with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. “Not only did the winning entries demonstrate a strong understanding of energy conservation, but they also reflected the power of collaboration and learning in our classrooms. We’re so proud to see students leading the way toward a more energy‑efficient future—keep asking questions, keep creating, and keep making a difference.”
