Duct Insulation Rebate – Oil

The Duct Insulation Program for oil heated homes has ended. Duct Insulation must be purchased and installed on or before December 31, 2023 and we will accept applications until February 15, 2024. After this date, the program will be closed and applications for oil-heated homes will not be accepted.

Receive a rebate of 50% of the cost of duct insulation up to $500.

Ducts must be used for your primary heating system and run through an unheated area of your home such as a basement, crawl space or attic to qualify.

Benefits

  • Installing insulation to your uninsulated heating ducts can save you up to 5% on your heating costs.
  • Insulating your ducts can increase the comfort of your home.
  • Exposed ducts running through an unheated area of your home such as your basement, crawl space or attic can cause unwanted heat loss. By insulating these ducts, you can save energy and money while increasing the lifespan of your equipment.

HOME ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible:

  • You are the homeowner and the home has an active electricity account.
  • Your home is on a permanent foundation and is intended as a primary residence.
  • Contractors and owners of rental properties can participate in the rebate programs if they meet eligibility requirements.
  • New and existing homes can qualify for the duct insulation rebate.
  • Your home uses at least 1,000 litres of oil annually. A copy of a current annual statement or receipt that shows a minimum of 1,000 litres of oil consumption must be included with the application.

PROJECT ELIGIBILITY

  • Insulated ductwork is for your primary heating system. Other types of ductwork, such as for heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) or other exhaust ductwork does not qualify.
  • Duct insulation must be CSA-approved with a verifiable R-Value.
  • Duct insulation must be applied to the outside of the ductwork.
  • Only exposed ductwork that runs through unheated areas of your home such as basements, crawls spaces or attics will qualify.
  • The rebate applies to pre-tax insulation costs. Other materials and labour will not be reimbursed.
  • Insulation intended for the purpose of insulating ductwork such as duct wrap or duct sleeves must be used for this project. It is not recommended to attempt to insulate your ductwork with other types of insulation.
  • You may add to existing insulation to reach the recommended R-Value, but rebates will not be provided to replace existing insulation.
  • The R-Value of the insulation materials must meet the minimum (R-6) and maximum (R-8) requirements after the insulation is installed.
  • Duct insulation was purchased on or after September 26, 2022.
  • If you received funding for duct insulation through the Home Energy Savings Program you are not eligible for this rebate.

HOW TO BUY & INSTALL

  • You can purchase your duct insulation at a local retailer or online. Keep your receipt or proof of purchase. You will need to submit a copy with your application.
  • You can install the insulation yourself or hire a contractor. Only the cost of the insulation material will be eligible for reimbursement.
  • Ensure you buy duct insulation which has the qualifying R-Value of R-6 to R-8 and is intended for use on ducts such as duct wrap or duct sleeve insulation.
  • Ensure duct insulation is installed on the outside of the ductwork.

HOW TO APPLY

Once your duct insulation is installed you can apply online or by mail. Your rebate will be applied as a credit on your electricity bill.

  • Upload or mail a copy of your receipt or proof of purchase with your application.
  • Upload a copy of your current annual statement or receipt that shows a minimum of 1,000 litres of oil consumption.
  • Allow up to eight weeks for processing.
  • Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro may visit your home and confirm the duct insulation installation at any time within 15 months from when the rebate was processed.
